What is a Call Center?

by jen 18. May 2009 14:56

A call center is a centralized office used for the purpose of receiving and transmitting a large volume of requests by telephone. A call center is operated by a company to administer incoming product support or information inquiries from consumers. Outgoing calls for telemarketing, clientele, product services, and debt collection are also made. In addition to a call center, collective handling of letters, faxes, live chat, and e-mails at one location is known as a contact center.

A call center is often operated through an extensive open workspace for call center agents, with work stations that include a computer for each agent, a telephone set/headset connected to a telecom switch, and one or more supervisor stations. It can be independently operated or networked with additional centers, often linked to a corporate computer network, including mainframes, microcomputers and LANs. Increasingly, the voice and data pathways into the center are linked through a set of new technologies called computer telephony integration (CTI).

Most major businesses use call centers to interact with their customers. Examples include utility companies, mail order catalogue retailers, and customer support for computer hardware and software. Some businesses even service internal functions through call centers. Examples of this include help desks, retail financial support, and sales support.

Selecting The Right Office Chair

In first considering the "conventional" style of office chair, there are a number of things an ergonomic chair should have, including:

  • Seat height. Office chair seat height should be easily adjustable. A pneumatic adjustment lever is the easiest way to do this. A seat height that ranges from about 16 to 21 inches off the floor should work for most people. This allows the user to have his or her feet flat on the floor, with thighs horizontal and arms even with the height of the desk.
  • Seat width and depth. The seat should have enough width and depth to support any user comfortably. Usually 17-20 inches wide is the standard. The depth (from front to back of the seat) needs to be enough so that the user can sit with his or her back against the backrest of the ergonomic office chair while leaving approximately 2 to 4 inches between the back of the knees and the seat of the chair. The forward or backward tilt of the seat should be adjustable.
  • Lumbar support. Lower back support in an ergonomic chair is very important. The lumbar spine has an inward curve, and sitting for long periods without support for this curve tends to lead to slouching (which flattens the natural curve) and strains the structures in the lower spine. An ergonomic chair should have a lumbar adjustment (both height and depth) so each user can get the proper fit to support the inward curve of the lower back.
  • Backrest. The backrest of an ergonomic office chair should be 12 to 19 inches wide. If the backrest is separate from the seat, it should be adjustable in height and angle. It should be able to support the natural curve of the spine, again with special attention paid to proper support of the lumbar region. If the office chair has the seat and backrest together as one piece, the backrest should be adjustable in forward and back angles, with a locking mechanism to secure it from going too far backward once the user has determined the appropriate angle.
  • Seat material. The material on the office chair seat and back should have enough padding to be comfortable to sit on for extended periods of time. Having a cloth fabric that breathes is preferable to a harder surface.
  • Armrests. Office chair armrests should be adjustable. They should allow the user's arms to rest comfortably and shoulders to be relaxed. The elbows and lower arms should rest lightly, and the forearm should not be on the armrest while typing.
  • Swivel. Any conventional style or ergonomic chair should easily rotate so the user can reach different areas of his or her desk without straining. - Source

Organize Your Office with Office Remix

    by jen 27. April 2009 08:15

Office Organization is key to providing a sane, comfortable work environment for your employees and guests. Read the below guide to learn about Office Organization and the benifits that follow:

Office organization is a vital part of increasing your efficiency and getting more work done in less time. If you add up all the time that's eaten up by looking for the stapler or finding the right email address, you'll probably be shocked to see it add up to hours every week - hours that could be spent more effectively promoting your business or just plain getting your work done. Home office organization is, if anything, even more important if only because there are so many other drains on your time at home. If you just can't seem to ever finish up all the tasks you need to get done, try a few of these home office organization tips and see what a difference a little bit of organization makes.

    Office Organization Tips:

    1. Arrange your home office so that everything you need is within reach.

Take quick stock of all the equipment and supplies that you use many times a day - and don't forget things like the wastepaper basket. Put the wastebasket next to your desk and the printer within arm's reach of your chair. Keep a supply of printer paper and ink on a shelf behind you so you don't have to leave the office to get it - and can easily see when you're running low.

    2. Strip your desktop to the bare essentials.

A cluttered desktop is an invitation to the gremlins that hide your most important papers. Your second step in getting organized - the first was re-arranging your home office - is to get everything off your desk except those things that you use every day. Those things include your computer, telephone, in-out mail bins and your current project. Everything else should have another home - and should be returned to it as soon as you're done using it.

    3. Use drawer organizers to get your drawers neat and easy to use.

You should have a supply drawer for pens, pencils, paper clips, stamps and anything else that you use regularly. A drawer bin or organizer will help you keep those drawers organized so that you can easily find what you need within seconds.

    4. File your papers the first time you handle them.

Don't let things collect on your desk. Decide where they go the first time you handle them. There should be three options - a project file, the outbox or the round file.

    5. End each day by putting away.

At the end of the day, put away everything on your desk so that you come in to a clean desk in the morning. It will make it easy to stay organized, and to start work with a fresh perspective.

At Haworth, we believe that as business changes and workstyles evolve, workspaces must adapt, too. After all, the office of today looks very different from the office of twenty, ten, or even five years ago.

That's why we've become a champion of adaptable workspace solutions. In addition to being more user-focused and economical, they are also more sustainable, responsible choices. And they help bridge aesthetic objectives and business needs.

      Adaptable Workspace Solutions are:

      • User-focused. People are at the heart of every business. By increasing satisfaction and comfort, and supporting a variety of user needs, Haworth products help attract and retain top talent. At the same time, they can effectively enhance performance, helping achieve other business goals.
      • Economical. By making moves, adds, and changes faster and easier, minimizing downtime, reducing the need for new product with every change, and building in energy efficiency, Haworth products make economic sense throughout their lifetimes.
      • Sustainable. There's no "tear it out and start over" mentality here. We look at manufacturing processes, materials sourcing, and opportunities to recycle. But the heart of our philosophy is re-use. Making every component work in multiple ways diverts massive amounts from landfills.
      • Integrated. Our complete dimensioning and materials integration across product lines provides exceptional design freedom while ensuring that every space attains a cohesive aesthetic that retains its integrity with every configuration.
